How to play Typing Battle: solo practice and versus matches
A typing game where you type the Japanese words shown on screen in romaji. Solo practice has four courses where you aim for a high score and rank, and it shows which keys you struggle with. In a match, both players get the same words, and every correct keystroke pushes the center gauge toward your opponent. Push it all the way to win on the spot; when 90 seconds are up, whoever has pushed further wins. Because you type on a keyboard, it is for computers only. All words are in Japanese.
- Players: 1–2 players
- Price: free
- Runs in the browser (no install)
The game screen is in Japanese.
Solo practice can be played right away from this page without signing in (your personal bests stay in this browser). Online matches and leaderboard records require signing in with a Google account. To play against a friend, they also need to create an account and register as your friend.
Typing Battle modes
- Solo Practice (ひとりで練習): four courses, Easy (かんたん), Normal (ふつう), Hard (むずかしい) and Extreme (激ムズ), 60–120 seconds each
- Random Match (ランダムマッチ): find an opponent online (Normal course)
- Room Match (ルーム対戦): play a friend using a room ID. The host chooses the course
- Leaderboard (ランキング): see practice records for each course
Basic rules of Typing Battle
- Type the Japanese words shown on screen correctly in romaji. When you finish a word, you move on to the next one.
- The courses differ by word length. Easy has short words of 2–5 characters (60 seconds), Normal has 5–9 characters (60 seconds), Hard has proverbs and short sentences (90 seconds), and Extreme has long sentences of 15 or more characters and polite expressions (120 seconds).
- Your practice score adds points for each correct key, a bonus based on how many words in a row you have finished without a mistake (your combo), and points for each finished word. A mistake costs 5 points and resets your combo to 0. You get a rank from S to D based on your score.
- In a match, each correct key moves the gauge 1 toward your opponent, and finishing a word moves it 3 more. Push it all the way for a KO win; if it is not decided in 90 seconds, whoever has pushed further wins.
How to play on Asobi Lounge
- Type on a computer keyboard. If you open the game on a phone or tablet, you are asked to play on a computer.
- Common spellings are all accepted: "shi" (し) as shi, si or ci, "tsu" (つ) as tsu or tu, and "ja" (じゃ) as ja, jya or zya. You can type "n" (ん) as nn, or as a single n when the next sound is a consonant.
- The romaji guide on screen remembers the spellings you have used before and changes to match (if you type si, it shows si).
- Press Esc to stop during practice. The results show your score, accuracy, keystrokes per second and the keys you missed most.
The words
There are 696 words in all, and each course uses the ones that fit its length. By count, Easy uses 366 words, from "cat" (猫) and "dog" (犬) up to "party" (パーティー); Normal uses 276; Hard uses 156, such as the sayings "the strong eat the weak" (弱肉強食) and "three years on a stone" (石の上にも三年); and Extreme uses 78, such as "the frog in the well knows nothing of the great ocean" (井の中の蛙大海を知らず) and "thank you for taking time out of your busy day" (本日はお忙しいところ恐れ入ります). Words right at a length boundary can appear in two courses.
Example: how your score grows
In the Easy course, each correct key is worth 10 points, and each word you finish in a row without a mistake adds 2 points per key (up to 50 words). For example, after finishing 10 words in a row, one key is worth 10 + 10 × 2 = 30 points. You also get 50 points every time you finish a word. A mistake resets your combo to 0 and you start again from 10 points per key, so putting accuracy ahead of speed gives you a higher score in the end.
Rank thresholds
- Easy: S at 6,000 points or more, A at 4,500 or more, B at 3,000 or more, C at 1,500 or more
- Normal: S at 9,000 points, A at 6,500, B at 4,000, C at 2,000
- Hard: S at 15,000 points, A at 10,000, B at 6,000, C at 3,000
- Extreme: S at 25,000 points, A at 17,000, B at 10,000, C at 5,000
Tips
- Start in practice mode and work on typing accurately while keeping your fingers on the home position.
- A mistake breaks your combo and stops your score from growing, so put accuracy ahead of speed.
- Keep in mind the "keys you missed most" from your results, and type words containing those keys carefully.
- Learning how vowels and consonants are typed cuts down on hesitation.
