Yacht rules: combinations, scoring and how to get the bonus
A dice game where you roll 5 dice up to 3 times per turn to make combinations, fill in a 12-category score sheet and compete on the total. Scoring 63 or more in the number section earns a 35-point bonus. The dice roll across the screen, and you tap the ones you want to keep. You can play solo for a high score or play online.
- Players: 1–2 players
- Price: free
- Runs in the browser (no install)
The game screen is in Japanese.
Games against the CPU and solo modes work right away without signing in. Online play (random matches and private rooms) and saving stats or leaderboard scores require signing in with a Google account. To play with a friend, your friend also needs to create an account and register as your friend.
Yacht modes
- Solo play (ソロプレイ): go for a high score in 12 turns. If you are signed in, your best score goes on the leaderboard
- Random Match (ランダムマッチ): find an opponent online and take turns rolling the dice
- Room Match (ルーム対戦): play a friend using a room ID
Basic rules of Yacht
- You can roll the dice up to 3 times per turn. After the first roll, you can keep the dice you want and reroll only the rest.
- When you finish rolling (you do not have to use all 3 rolls), choose one empty category on the score sheet and write your score there. There are 12 categories, so there are 12 turns in all.
- Once you fill in a category, you cannot change it. If your dice do not make any combination, you still have to write 0 somewhere.
- In the number section, Ones to Sixes (1の目 to 6の目), your score is the total of the dice showing that number. If the six categories add up to 63 or more, you get a 35-point bonus.
- Choice (チョイス) is the total of all 5 dice. Four of a Kind (フォーカード, 4 or more of the same number) and Full House (フルハウス, 3 of one number and 2 of another) also score the total of all 5 dice when you make them. Five of the same number can also be written as a Full House.
- Small Straight (Sストレート, 4 in a row) scores 15 points, Large Straight (Lストレート, 5 in a row) 30 points, and Yacht (ヨット, all 5 the same) 50 points.
How to play on Asobi Lounge
- Press Roll (振る) and the dice roll. When they stop, tap the dice you want to keep and press Reroll (振り直す).
- Each empty category on the score sheet shows how many points you would get with the current dice, and the highest-scoring one is highlighted. Tap the category you want to confirm it.
- In online play, both score sheets are shown side by side, and you can watch the dice on your opponent's turn too.
The maximum score is 325
Under this site's scoring, writing the maximum in every category gives a total of 325 points: 105 in the number section (five of each number) plus the 35-point bonus, Choice 30, Four of a Kind 30, Full House 30 (all five 6s), Small Straight 15, Large Straight 30 and Yacht 50. In practice, getting three of each number in the number section (63 points in total) is enough to reach the bonus.
Odds of a combination on the first roll
5 dice have 6 to the 5th power = 7,776 possible outcomes. Using this site's scoring as is, here is how many outcomes make each combination on the first roll alone.
- Small Straight: 1,200 outcomes (about 15.4%)
- Full House: 306 outcomes (about 3.9%, including the 6 outcomes with all five dice the same)
- Large Straight: 240 outcomes (about 3.1%)
- Four of a Kind: 156 outcomes (about 2.0%, including all five the same)
- Yacht: 6 outcomes (about 0.08%)
How often does a Yacht come up?
We ran 2 million computer trials of going for a Yacht over 3 rolls with just one approach: keep the most common number and reroll the rest. About 4.6% succeeded. At those odds, getting one in 12 turns is a good result. Rather than chasing only a Yacht, staying ready to switch to Four of a Kind or the number section partway through means writing 0 less often.
Tips for raising your score
- In the number section, three of each number gives exactly 63 points and reaches the bonus. If you got four of a high number in some turn, it can make up for a shortfall in a low number.
- Choice scores points whatever you roll. Do not use it up early; save it as a fallback for when your plan does not work out.
- A Small Straight comes up about 15% of the time even on the first roll. Having a 3 and a 4 makes a straight easier to complete.
- If you must write 0 late in the game, choose a category whose loss hurts least, such as Ones (5 points at most).
