Piano modes

  • Performance game: judges your timing and gives you a score and a rank
  • Practice: the song waits until you press the right key
  • Demo (お手本): watch and listen to automatic playback
  • Free play: play whatever you like with 14 instrument sounds

Basic rules of Piano

  • When a note reaches the line above the keyboard, play the key directly below it.
  • Hits are judged, from the smallest timing error, as "Perfect" (ぴったり), "Good" (よい) and "Close" (おしい). Letting a note pass without playing it is a "Miss".
  • Consecutive hits build a combo, and your score (out of 1,000,000) is based on accuracy and your max combo. Ranks go from S to D.
  • Easy is right hand only and slow (75% of the original tempo), Normal is right hand only at the original tempo, and Hard adds the left hand.

How to play on Asobi Lounge

  • On a computer, the bottom row of letter keys (Z, X, C...) and the top row (Q, W, E...) are the white keys, and the row just above each of them holds the black keys. The keys are labeled on the on-screen keyboard.
  • On phones and tablets, tap the keys with your fingers. You can play with any number of fingers at once.
  • If you connect a MIDI keyboard, you can use it as is (supported browsers only).
  • In free play, you can choose the sound (14 kinds, such as grand piano, violin and koto), the key labels (Do-Re-Mi, ABC or none) and a metronome. Choosing a song also shows its sheet music.

Songs and difficulty

In the song list, each song is marked Beginner, Intermediate or Advanced as a guide. Easy, Normal and Hard in the performance game choose how you play (one or both hands, and the tempo), so you pick them separately from the song's level.

  • Beginner: Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, The Frog Song (Kaeru no Uta), Mary Had a Little Lamb, Butterfly (Chocho)
  • Intermediate: London Bridge, Sakura Sakura, Jingle Bells, When the Saints Go Marching In, Ode to Joy, Going Home, Canon
  • Advanced: Greensleeves, Minuet in G Major, Für Elise

Judging and score calculation

A note hit within 50 ms is "Perfect", within 100 ms "Good" and within 160 ms "Close". The score is out of 1,000,000: 900,000 points come from accuracy (the average with Perfect = 1, Good = 0.7 and Close = 0.4) and 100,000 from the length of your max combo. Rank S is 950,000 or more, A is 880,000 or more, B is 780,000 or more and C is 650,000 or more.

For example, if you play 100 notes with 80 Perfect, 15 Good, 5 Close and 0 Miss and keep the combo to the end, accuracy is (80 + 10.5 + 2) ÷ 100 = 0.925, worth 832,500 points; the combo adds 100,000, for a total of 932,500 and rank A. Even with every other note Perfect, if you miss once midway and your max combo is 60, you get 891,000 + 60,000 = 951,000 and just make S.

Tips for playing well

  • Listen to the song in "Demo" first and learn the order in "Practice" before you try the performance game; you will improve faster.
  • If your hits are always judged late, use "Timing adjustment" (タイミング調整) in the settings. There is also an automatic adjustment where you just press along with a sound.
  • Hard uses a wide keyboard, so on a phone, landscape mode is recommended.
  • The 100,000 combo points are only full if you never break the combo. In fast passages "Good" is fine; focus on not missing.
