Stock Simulator modes

  • Solo play: try trading with virtual money
  • Leaderboard: compete on total assets, growth rate this week and this month, and among friends (sign-in required)

Basic rules of Stock Simulator

  • You start with virtual money (10 million yen).
  • Search for a stock, select it and trade while watching the price. You can buy single shares, and there are no fees or taxes.
  • The total value of your assets changes with the prices of the stocks you hold. US stocks and dollar-denominated ETFs are converted into yen at the current USD/JPY rate.
  • A limit order fills automatically when the price reaches your level (valid for 30 days). A stop-loss (stop order) sells automatically when the price falls to your level.
  • Regular investing buys a fixed amount every business day, every week or every month.
  • When a stock you hold pays a dividend, you receive cash in proportion to your shares. Stock splits are reflected too.
  • Limit orders, stop-losses, regular investing and dividends that come due while the screen is closed are replayed from daily price moves the next time you open it, so their timing may differ slightly from the real time.

How to play on Asobi Lounge

  • Open a stock from the market list or by searching for its name or code (Japanese names also work).
  • On the stock page, choose a market or limit order, set the number of shares and place the order. You also set stop-losses and regular investing here.
  • The assets tab shows your holdings, profit and loss, asset history, allocation and trade history.
  • Keep trading and investing to unlock achievements. Achievements stay even if you reset your assets.
  • The money in the game is virtual and has nothing to do with real money.

Stocks in the list and stocks you can search for

The market list shows 48 Japanese stocks, 30 US stocks and 11 ETFs, with Japanese names and sectors. You cannot buy indexes such as the Nikkei 225, the S&P 500 or the NASDAQ Composite directly, but you can invest through ETFs that track them (1321 for the Nikkei 225, VOO for the S&P 500, QQQ for the NASDAQ).

Stocks that are not in the list can be found by searching Tokyo Stock Exchange and US stocks and ETFs (up to 6 results per search).

Example: US stocks also move with the exchange rate

Here are made-up numbers for illustration. If you buy a US stock at $200 a share when $1 is 150 yen, one share costs 30,000 yen. Even if the price stays at $200, if the yen strengthens to 140 yen per dollar, the value falls to 28,000 yen per share (about 6.7% down). If the yen weakens instead, the value rises even at the same stock price. Mixing Japanese and US stocks lets you experience these currency moves too.

Limits to keep in mind

  • You can have up to 20 open limit and stop-loss orders at once, up to 10 regular investing plans, and up to 30 stocks in your favorites (watchlist).
  • Events while the screen was closed are replayed for up to the last 90 days.
  • There are 19 achievements, such as "First trade", "First dividend" and "Japan-US diversification", which you collect as you keep trading and investing.

Tips

  • Spread your money across several stocks instead of one to soften the impact of a drop.
  • Look into what each company actually does, not just its price moves, to understand investing better.
  • Decide your stop-loss price in advance so you don't keep holding a falling stock and lose a large part of your assets.
  • Regular investing is a good way to try buying the same amount every month. You end up buying fewer shares when prices are high and more when they are low.

Frequently asked questions

Can I trade real stocks?
No. This is a game that uses virtual money. It makes no real trades and gives no investment advice.
Are prices real-time?
Depending on how the price data is retrieved, prices may differ from actual market moves. If a price cannot be fetched, the game never shows a made-up price; it keeps the last price it got and tells you on screen.
Can I trade outside market hours?
Yes. Outside market hours, orders fill at the most recent price.
Can I buy an index (such as the Nikkei 225)?
You cannot trade an index itself. You can invest through an ETF that tracks it (such as 1321 for the Nikkei 225).
Is Stock Simulator free to play?
Yes, it costs nothing. Without signing in, you can try trading in a trial account (a virtual 10 million yen). Trial assets are saved only in this browser and do not appear on the leaderboard. Sign in with a Google account to save your assets to your account and join the leaderboard.
