Orbit Star: how to play and tips for merging planets

A physics puzzle where you drop planets from any direction toward a core that pulls them in, and merge matching planets. Planets grow through 10 stages from the Moon to the Sun, and two Suns that collide become a supernova and vanish. If a planet sticks out more than halfway past the red dotted line for 2 seconds, the game is over.

Orbit Star modes

  • Endless: keep going until you cross the danger line, and chase your personal best and the leaderboard
  • Time Attack: see how high you can score in 2 minutes
  • Daily Challenge (今日のチャレンジ): a daily challenge where everyone plays with the same planet order that day (changes at midnight Japan time)

Basic rules of Orbit Star

  • Aim from a point on the outer circle and drop a planet. Dropped planets are pulled toward the core at the center.
  • When two planets of the same kind collide, they merge into one larger planet. The order is Moon, Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Neptune, Uranus, Saturn, Jupiter and Sun.
  • When two Suns merge, they become a supernova and vanish, scoring 1,000 points.
  • After you drop a planet, if another merge happens within 1.2 seconds of the previous merge, it becomes a chain, and points rise to 1.5×, 2× and 2.5× (up to 3×).
  • As your score rises, your level goes up and more kinds of planets drop. From level 2, meteors are mixed in. Meteors do not merge with planets; two meteors that collide shatter for 50 points.
  • If a planet sticks out more than halfway past the red dotted line for 2 seconds, the game is over. A newly dropped planet is not counted until it first comes inside the line (up to 1.6 seconds).

How to play on Asobi Lounge

  • On a computer, aim with the cursor and click; on a phone, aim with your finger and release to drop.
  • On a keyboard, move your aim with the left and right arrow keys (or A and D) and drop with Space, the down arrow, S or Enter. Q and E rotate the whole board left and right, and P or Esc pauses.
  • Holding the on-screen "Rotate left" (左に回す) or "Rotate right" (右に回す) button spins all the planets.
  • You can see the next planet and the one after it on screen.

Points for each planet

Points depend on the planet the merge creates (these are before the chain multiplier).

  • Mercury 10, Venus 20, Earth 40, Mars 70
  • Neptune 110, Uranus 160, Saturn 230
  • Jupiter 320, Sun 450
  • Supernova from two Suns 1,000, two meteors 50

Levels and which planets drop

Your level rises with your score: level 2 starts at 500 points, level 3 at 1,500, level 4 at 3,000 and level 5 at 5,000, and the top level, 10, starts at 30,000. The planets that drop are the Moon, Mercury and Venus at levels 1–2, up to Earth at levels 3–5, and up to Mars from level 6.

Smaller planets drop more often. Calculated from the game's settings, at levels 1–2 the Moon is about 40%, Mercury about 33% and Venus about 27%. The chance of a meteor is 2% at level 2 and rises by 1% per level (up to 10%). Meteors always come in pairs, and the second one drops within 3 turns.

Records and leaderboard

Your personal best for each of the 3 modes is kept in this browser (for the Daily Challenge, only that day's best). Your Endless personal best also goes on the leaderboard when you are signed in.

Tips for higher scores

  • Drop planets so that same-sized ones end up next to each other, and build shapes where one merge leads to the next; chains boost your score.
  • Keep large planets together near the core to leave room for small planets on the outside, so they are less likely to stick out.
  • Rotate planets that are about to stick out toward an open side. As long as a planet is not more than halfway past the red dotted line, the timer does not count.
  • Meteors cannot be cleared by merging, so place the first one where the second can easily hit it before the second arrives.

Frequently asked questions

Can I play on a phone?
Yes. Aim with your finger and release to drop. Use the "Rotate left" and "Rotate right" buttons to rotate the board.
What is different about the Daily Challenge?
Everyone gets the planets in the same order that day, so you can compare scores under the same conditions. A new challenge starts at midnight Japan time.
Is Orbit Star free to play?
