How to play Drawing Quiz: draw, guess and how scoring works
A party game where the drawer draws a prompt and the other players guess it by typing answers in the answer box. It is less about drawing skill and more about clever ways to get the idea across. Create a room for 2–10 players, or practice drawing alone in Theme Challenge (お題チャレンジ). Prompts and answers are in Japanese.
- Also known as: Oekaki Quiz, Draw and Guess
- Players: 2–10 players (1 in Theme Challenge)
- Price: free
- Runs in the browser (no install)
The game screen is in Japanese.
Theme Challenge (お題チャレンジ), where you draw alone, can be played right away from this page without signing in. Rooms for playing together require signing in with a Google account. To invite a friend, they also need to create an account and register as your friend.
Drawing Quiz modes
- Theme Challenge (お題チャレンジ): practice drawing prompts alone within a time limit. You can save your drawings
- Play Now (すぐに遊ぶ): join a public room that is waiting for players (or create one and wait if there is none)
- Create Room (部屋を作る): create a room to play with friends (you can also set a password)
- Find Room (部屋をさがす): pick from the list of public rooms, or join with a room ID and password
Basic rules of Drawing Quiz
- Players take turns as the drawer, picking one of three prompts to draw (if you do not pick within 15 seconds, one is chosen automatically). The other players cannot see the prompt.
- The other players look at the drawing and type answers in the answer box. Hiragana, katakana and kanji are all accepted, and you can answer as many times as you like. The drawer cannot answer.
- A correct guess earns 50 points plus up to 50 more depending on the time left, and the first player to guess correctly gets a further 10-point bonus. The drawer gets 20 points each time someone guesses correctly (up to 120 points per turn).
- If the prompt is 3 or more characters long, one character is revealed as a hint at the halfway point and again at three quarters of the drawing time. After everyone has drawn for the set number of rounds, the results are shown, and the highest total score wins.
How to play on Asobi Lounge
- Create a room, or join one by ID or from the list. The host sets the number of rounds (1–4), the drawing time (60–120 seconds) and the prompt genres, then starts.
- The drawer chooses from a pen, an eraser and a fill tool, with 20 colors and 4 brush sizes. On a phone you can draw with your finger. On a computer you can also use B (pen), E (eraser), G (fill), 1–4 (size) and Ctrl+Z (undo).
- Type your answer in the answer box and send it with the Answer (回答) button or the Enter key. The result, Correct (正解!), Close (おしい!) or Wrong (ちがいます), is shown only to you, and nobody else ever sees what you typed. When someone guesses correctly, only that fact is shared with everyone.
About the prompts
There are 446 prompts in 8 genres: living things, food, objects, vehicles, nature and weather, places and buildings, sports and games, and people and jobs. They range from easy-to-draw things like "dog" to places and jobs that are hard to convey by shape, so narrowing the genres lets you match the players' ages and tastes.
Practicing alone with Theme Challenge
Pick one of three prompts, draw it within the time limit, and press Done (できた!) to move on. You can choose the number of prompts (3, 5 or 8), the time per drawing (30, 60 or 90 seconds) and the genres. At the end you can view all your drawings together; they are saved on this device, and you can also save them as images. It works without signing in, so use it to practice before joining a room.
Tips for drawing and guessing
- Draw the most distinctive parts of the prompt (shape, color, size) first to get it across quickly.
- As a guesser, keep typing whatever words come to mind, even while the drawing is unfinished. If you see Close (おしい!), you are almost there.
- For hard prompts, drawing an action or a situation (a scene) can serve as a hint.
- The faster others guess, the more points the drawer gets too. Rather than adding fine detail, show the overall shape in the first few seconds.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I enjoy it if I am bad at drawing?
- The game is about finding ways to get the idea across, so drawing skill does not matter.
- How many people can play?
- Up to 10 players per room. Players who join partway also take a turn as the drawer at the end of that round.
- Can other players see the answers I type?
- No. Whether you are correct is shown only to you; the others are told only who guessed correctly.
- Is Drawing Quiz free to play?
- Yes, it costs nothing. Theme Challenge (お題チャレンジ), where you draw alone, can be played right away from this page without signing in. Rooms for playing together require signing in with a Google account. To invite a friend, they also need to create an account and register as your friend.
